How it works
Every NSC subject mark falls into one of seven achievement levels. Your APS is the sum of the levels for your best six subjects, without Life Orientation, which is how most South African universities compare applicants.
The pass level follows the national rules: Home Language at 40% or more, six of seven subjects at 30% or more, and then four subjects (not Life Orientation) at 40% for a Diploma pass or at 50% for a Bachelor’s pass. Universities and colleges also require 30% in the language you’ll study in, and some courses need specific subjects.

Questions
How is APS worked out?
Each subject mark is turned into a level from 1 to 7, and the levels of your best six subjects are added up, leaving out Life Orientation. The highest possible APS is 42.
Do all universities use the same APS?
No. Most use something close to this, but some count Life Orientation, use their own point scale, or require minimum marks in specific subjects. Always check the admission requirements of the course you want.
What do I need for a Bachelor’s pass?
At least 40% in your Home Language, at least 50% in four subjects (not counting Life Orientation), and at least 30% in two other subjects. The four subjects must come from the list of designated subjects, which includes most academic subjects.
Can I fail a subject and still pass matric?
Yes. You need to pass six of your seven subjects, as long as you meet the other requirements for your pass level.
